EMPLOYEE MEMORIAL

It has been said that our National Park System is America's "best idea." Unfortunately, these beautiful and historic places do not come without sacrifices. National Park Service employees work to preserve and protect our national treasures while working in some of the most challenging environments and remote locations in the United States. They often work in places with little cell or radio reception; encounter challenging wildlife interactions; work under stressful, adverse weather, and environmental conditions; and interact with park visitors in places where the employees have little help. The Department of Labor and FBI have identified our law enforcement officers as being the most assaulted or killed in the line of duty (see Analysis of Assaults Upon National Park Rangers: 1997-2003  for background information). The National Park Service is not alone in this tragedy, for in the last 130 years over 3,000 protected area workers have died at work across the world. The women and men in this Memorial have made the ultimate sacrifice on duty or in the line of duty while serving the American people and working to preserve and protect our nation's "Crown Jewels." Please take a moment to remember and reflect on how they dedicated their lives to the calling of the National Park Service and honor their many sacrifices.

We dedicate this Memorial to the families and friends of our employees who died in the line of duty—they too paid the price for the sacrifice made by their loved ones.

Jeff Ohlfs
NPS Chief Ranger (Ret.)

Many thanks to the National Archives staff, family members, park archivists, curators and rangers who have generously provided us information for the employees from your park. (Neal Herbert/NPS Photo)

We have been compared to the military forces because of our
dedication and esprit de corps. In a sense this is true. We do
act as guardians of our country's land. Our National Park
Service uniform which we wear with pride does command the
respect of our fellow citizens. We have the spirit of fighters,
not as a destructive force, but as a power for good. With this
spirit, each of us is an integral part of the preservation of the
magnificent heritage we have been given, so that centuries
from now people of our world, or perhaps of other worlds, may
see and understand what is unique to our earth, never
changing, eternal.

Horace Albright, 1933
