The blue-and-gold regimental standard of the 7th Cavalry remained with the
pack train during the battle.
Each company carried a stars and stripes guidon. This one is similar to
those carried in the battle.
Chartered by the Government for the campaign of 1876, the Far West performed
important service in transporting troops, supplies, and dispatches. With Reno's
wounded on board, the boat steamed from the mouth of the Bighorn to Bismark, 710 miles,
in 54 hoursa record unsurpassed in steamboating on the Upper Missouri.
On October 10, 1877, the remains of Bvt. Maj. Gen. George Armstrong Custer, lieutenant
colonel of the 7th Cavalry, were buried with full military honors in the cemetery near
the Old Cadet Chapel at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. Today, a large
granite monument marks the grave.
