The ranger pursued, but backed off when both vehicles approached a section of the highway with many curves. J.E.L., however, continued to accelerate, and lost control of his car: it went airborne on a comer, flipped several times and impacted so hard that it took an hour and a half to extricate him. Although he was alive at the accident scene, he expired at the hospital. J.E.L.'s license had been revoked following two convictions for drunk driving.
