Day/date: April 7, 1987 FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Log number: 87-38 Date/time of incident: 4/3 (began) Date/time received: 4/7, noon Park: Bandelier Location: Backcountry Reported by: Vivian Garber, RAD/SWRO Phone(s): FTS 476-6371 Received by: Bill Halainen, RAD/WASO Phone(s): 343-4874 Summary: Search in Progress Following an initial report from SWRO, a follow-up call was made to Bandelier Chief Ranger Kevin McKibbin, who provided the following information: Mr. L.S. hiked into the park's backcountry on Friday, April 3rd, and was scheduled to return on Sunday. When he failed to return, a search was initiated and is now well underway. L.S., who was described as being inexperienced in backpacking but well- equipped, was reported to have suffered a knee injury while skiing three weeks ago. He was last seen at noon on Saturday near Stone Lions, which was slightly off his announced itinerary. About a half foot of snow fell on Sunday and a few inches more on Monday; both melted off quickly. Temperatures have dropped into the 20's at night. At present, about 30 people are involved in the search - all of them well-trained New Mexico search and rescue people. Currently deployed are an NPS horse team from the park, three New Mexico dog teams (with a fourth en route), four ground teams, a National Guard helicopter (with a second en route), and a CAP aircraft dispatched from Scott Air Force Base. The weather has improved, but searchers have not yet had any luck. Visitor Protection Chief Bob Belden is coordinating operations under the Incident Command System.
