Day/date: July 1, 1987 FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Brothers Missing in River/ Possible Drowning Log number: 87-132 Date/time of incident: 6/30, 10:30am Date/time received: 7/1, 11:00am Park: New River Gorge Location: Sandstone Falls Reported by: Jason Houck, CR (via Alscher, MARO) Received by: Bill Halainen, WASO Summary: The C. brothers ware with 2 other boys as they were wading across the river. All of them lost their footing and were swept a distance downstream/ 2 made it to shore where they waited for a couple of hours for the brothers, thinking they were playing a joke in not appearing. They finally reported the brothers as missing at approximately 2:00pm to the West Virginia State Police. The State Police, along with the NPS responded to the report. All searched until dark. At approximately 10:00pm the dam was shut down to allow the water level to go down to allow that area to be searched at daylight. Persons involved: Name Address DOB or age J.C. Cool Ridge, WVA 17 FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Arson - Wildland Fire Log number: 87-133 Date/time of incident: 6/26, 10:40pm Date/time received: 7/1, 1:30pm Park: Sequoia/Kings NP Location: Ash Mountain, Headquarters & Employee Residence Area Reported by: Doug Morris, CR, (via Jenny Hinson, i?P.G) Received by: Melissa Warner, WASO Summary: On 6/26, at approximately 10:40PM an off-duty fire aid noticed a fire to be burning in the area of park headquarters and the employee residence area. The fire spread quickly and eventually encompassed 160 acres. Firefighters totaling 175 were dispatched from various agencies to fight the blaze during the night. Equipment consisted of 4 pumpers and 2 helicopters. The fire threatened homes as well as park headquarters building. Nearby Potwisha CG was closed and utilized as a fire camp. The fire was contained by 6:00am on 6/27, and controlled at 7:00pm that evening. It has not yet been declared "out". A CDF employee found a homemade device (which is believed to have started the fire) approximately 1/4 mile from the housing area along the general highway. There are no suspects. Ho structures were damaged and no injuries occurred. NO estimate of damage has been determined. Potwisha CG has been reopened. Persons involved: Name Address DOB or age
