Day/date: August 24, 1987 FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Park Police Officer Shot And Wounded Log number: 87-206 Date/time of incident: 8/21, 2:35 pm Date/time received: 8/24, 9 am Park: Balt/Wash Parkway Location: Goodluck Road Reported by: Dave Blackburn, LES, NCRO Received by: Bill Halainen, Ranger Activities, WASO Summary: Officer P.G. was making a car stop on the southbound side of the parkway at Goodluck Road. Three males exited the car, and one began firing on him, hitting P.G. in the temple. As the three fled toward the woods, P.G. was able to return fire, hitting two of his assailants. He was also able to call for help; Eagle I arrived in short order and transported him to Washington Hospital Center, where he's reported to be in serious but stable condition. A search for the three males was begun immediately with officers from Prince George County, Maryland State Police, Greenbelt City, Prince George Sheriff's Office and Maryland National Capital Park Police assisting US Park Police. V.S. was apprehended at 3:55 pm; A.L.J. at 7:50 pm. The former had been shot in the foot by P.G., the latter in the right side of the back. Neither wound was serious. Both are being held for assault on a federal officer and assault with a dangerous weapon. The third person, K.A., who is thought to have done the shooting, is still at large, and is reported to be an escapee from the Maryland Halfway House in Baltimore. A search of the car uncovered a sawed-off shotgun, revolver and some crack (cocaine). The weapon used in the assault was also found at the scene. Persons involved: Name Address DOB or age P.G. The was pinned 5' under the rock and drowned. Efforts to extricate her have so far been unsuccessful; an upstream dam will decrease its discharge so that the body can be reached and removed. Double Z is a Class 5 rapid and is considered one of the most technically difficult to negotiate on the river. Alpine Bible Camp is a commercial rafting operation. Scull and victim disintegrated upon impact. The operator of the power boat attempted an immediate rescue. He then notified US Coast Guard and USPP. Both agencies responded to the scene. Due to the force of impact, an identification of the victim could not be made. No additional details as to the identification of the power boat operator or what actually occurred are known at this time. An identification of the deceased is pending. USPP/USCG are investigating. The operator of the power boat is A.D. The 29' Scotty Craft was powered by twin 325 HP inboard engines and has been impounded. The incident occurred entirely within National Park Service jurisdiction. The USPP, assisted by the NYPD 69th Precinct Detective Unit, are conducting the investigation. A dive was scheduled for Monday the 24th to search for evidence. A positive identification of the victim has been made; next of kin have not been located. Note: Gateway is the park in which this incident occurred, not Golden Gate as previously reported. He called dispatch; before he could investigate, however, three people carried in an Hispanic male with a gunshot in the shoulder. The victim was transported to George Washington Hospital and is in stable condition. Investigation revealed that the man had been approached by a black male, about 19 years old, who asked for money. When the victim either resisted or failed to provide the money, the man shot him with a small caliber weapon. An investigation is underway. (driver) and J.A.S. (passenger) were on a motorcycle which attempted to pass a large passenger bus and collided head-on with a car. R.A.H was coming up the channel in his powerboat, saw the anchor line, and hit J.I.L. in attempting to avoid the line. The incident occurred around sunset, and Hendricks was unable to see J.I.L. in the failing light. Florida marine police are investigating; no charges have been made against Hendricks. Park rangers checked, and found that they were members of the crew of a ship which had been seized by Bahamian authorities. Following the seizure, the Bahamians put the 72-man crew, all from the Dominican Republic, into 10 lifeboats and rafts and set them adrift. Rangers then began searching along the islands in the park, and found 4 of the 10 boats; at the time of the report, they were continuing the search for the others. The park notified Customs, Coast Guard and Immigration authorities. K.M. and S.M., who was a passenger, were thrown from the vehicle. Witnesses notified park rangers from the Tower district. S.M. was flown from the scene by Eannoc Life Flight to Eastern Idaho Medical Center where he died the following day due to multiple injuries. K.M. was treated and released.
