Day/date: September 17, 1987 FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Wounded Blackbear Destroyed Log number: 87-231 Date/time of incident: 9/15, Date/time received: 9/17, 8am Park: Kenai Fjords Location: Pederson Lagoon Reported by: Bruce Kaye, CR (through Rich O'Guin ARO) Received by: Melissa Warner, WASO Summary: Two NPS VIPs were patrolling Aialik Bay when they discovered a black bear in the lagoon. The animal had reportedly been there for approximately three days. It was on a tidal flat and wasn't able to pull itself out of the water. The chief ranger called the state troopers since the animal was off park land. The troopers authorized action which allowed rangers to use ropes to pull the bear out of the water. The bear had been shot in the back, paralyzing its legs. The bear was destroyed and the carcass was taken by the state troopers as evidence. The bear was a small male weighing approximately 150 lbs. A wave knocked them both down. When Mrs. G.L. stood up she did not see her husband. Several people on the beach saw G.L., got him out of the water and started CPR.
