Day/date: November 9, 1987 FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Drowning Log number: 87-260 Date/time of incident: 11/8, 430 pm Date/time received: 11/9, 9 am Park: Glen Canyon Location: Hall's Crossing Reported by: Dick Powell, Safety Officer, RMRO Received by: Bill Halainen, Ranger Activities, WASO Summary: Mr. J.L., a concessions employee who worked at Hall's Crossing, was attempting to teach a female friend how to operate a boat in the small harbor located at the crossing. J.L. was reported to have had 11 beers before lunch and a number of others thereafter. The occupants of the boat were also drinking. J.L. stood up in the boat and fell overboard. Although his companions threw life preservers to him, J.L. made no attempt to get to them and sank under the surface. Since the depth of the lake at this point is between 150' and 180', there will probably be no attempts made to recover the body. Persons involved: Name Address DOB or age J.L. Hall's Crossing, Utah About 22 FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Fatality - Possible Suicide Log number: 87-261 Date/time of incident: 11/8, 5 pm Date/time received: 11/9, 3 pm Park: Whiskeytown Location: South Fork Mountain Lookout Road Reported by: Jenny Hinson, Ranger Activities, WRO Received by: Bill Halainen, Ranger Activities, WASO Summary: Two park visitors who were riding mountain bikes on the road discovered Mr. R.S.W. in his vehicle. They could see that he was dead, and called a 911 number to get help. Rangers were notified and responded to the scene. They found a drier hose leading from the manifold of the car into the passenger compartment, and have ruled the incident a probable suicide. R.S.W. had been reported missing after he left home in a despondent state on the evening of Friday, November 6th. Persons involved: Name Address DOB or age R.S.W. Her car was hit head-on by another vehicle which had drifted into her lane, apparently because the driver of that vehicle fell asleep at the wheel. No further information is presently available.
