Day/date: February 19, 1988 RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Windstorm Fatality Log number: 88-26 Date/time of incident: 2/18, 8:20 pm Date/time received: 2/19, 11 am Park: Yosemite Location: Yosemite Valley Reported by: Phil Ward, RAD, WRO Received by: Bill Halainen, RAD, WASO Summary: Severe Santa Ana winds which swept over much of California blew down a number of trees in Yosemite Valley, including a 180-foot-tall Ponderosa pine which fell on a cabin occupied by J.E. (last name reported as B. in wire service stories), her mother and her mother's boyfriend. The girl was killed; the two adults suffered minor injuries. The lodge area was evacuated, but reopened to the public by midmorning on Friday. Sequoia has sent people to the park to assist in clearing remaining hazardous trees in the area. According to news reports, about twenty trees fell in the area, damaging five cabins and a number of vehicles. Winds as high as 60 mph were recorded in the park, and gusts of equal or higher speeds (up to 90 mph) toppled utility poles, fanned fires and damaged buildings all across the state.
