In two days of boat patrols on the Laguna Madre last month, rangers confiscated 7,200 feet of illegal gill nets and 1,700 feet of illegal trot lines. Rangers report that during those periods of time when routine boat patrols are conducted, about 5,000 feet of illegal nets are confiscated monthly. They attribute the recent increase in illegal fishing to the decrease in patrols.
