Day/date: April 25, 1988 RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Search in Progress Log number: 88-64 Date/time of incident: 4/24, 1:20 pm Date/time received: 4/25, 9 am Park: Big South Fork Location: Angel Falls Reported by: Steve Smith, RAD, SERO Received by: Bill Halainen, RAD, WASO Summary: E.H., an Israeli citizen and grad student in chemistry at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee, was hiking with a friend on a trail near Angel Falls, a hazardous rapid on the Cumberland River. The two had discussed the possibility of swimming across the river, and E.H.'s companion last saw him standing on a rock by the edge of the river. Shortly thereafter, other visitors near Angel Falls saw E.H. being swept through the rapids, but were unable to reach him. The NPS, local rescue squads and a US Forest Service helicopter have been engaged in a search for him since Sunday afternoon. Divers have also been searching the river. Air and water temperatures have both hovered around 40 degrees, so the chances for his survival are thought to be remote. Persons involved: Name Address DOB or age E.H. Israel Unknown
