Day/date: June 15, 1988 RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Suicide Log number: 88-104 Date/time of incident: 6/14, 4:45 pm Date/time received: 6/15, 11 am Park: Blue Ridge Location: North of Balsam Gap Reported by: Don Russell, RAD, SERO Received by: Jon Anglin, RAD, WASO Summary: An off-duty North Carolina Highway Patrolman saw D.E.W., 38, of Fletcher, North Carolina enter the parkway and drive north. A short time later the officer came upon D.E.W.'s car after it had collided with a guard rail. The officer found D.E.W. in the drivers seat with a gunshot wound in his chest. A recently fired handgun and a rambling suicide note in the car indicate that he apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while driving. Persons involved: Name Address DOB or age *** As Noted Above *** RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Drowning Log number: 88-105 Date/time of incident: 6/14, 2:45 pm Date/time received: 6/15, 2:30 pm Park: St. Croix Scenic River Location: 4 miles north of Highway 70 Reported by: Tom Thompson, RAD, MWRO Received by: Jon Anglin, RAD, WASO Summary: B.E.S., 24, of Cedar, Minnesota and 5 friends were floating downstream in inner tubes and drinking beer. B.E.S. had consumed an estimated 3-5 beers in an hour before he and his girlfriend went swimming. She had difficulty and B.E.S. and others went to her aid. She was assisted out of the water but B.E.S. was unable to make it to shore. Attempts made by B.E.S.'s friends to rescue him were unsuccessful. The Burnett County Sheriff's Office and NPS rangers were notified and responded. B.E.S.'s body was recovered from 7-9 feet of water shortly after.
