The U.S. Park Police Dive Team conducted an unsuccessful search for him that day. S.G.'s body washed ashore on the 19th. Evidence indicates that alcohol was involved. Persons involved: Name Address DOB or age RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Climbing Fatality Log number: 88-108 Date/time of incident: 6/18, 1:30 pm Date/time received: 6/20, 10:45 am Park: Black Canyon of the Gunnison Location: North Chasm View Wall Reported by: Tom McDonnell, John Chapman, RAD, RMRO Received by: Jon Anglin, RAD, WASO Summary: R.P.S. was the lead climber in an area known for soft, loose rock, when a hand or foot hold came loose causing him to fall. All his protection pieces pulled from the stone, causing him to fall 120 feet. R.P.S. struck his head before his belay partner could arrest the fall. His partners secured his body before climbing to safety. Rescue attempts have been hampered by the loose rock and precarious location of the body.
