Day/date: June 27, 1988 RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Drug Seizures and Arrests Log number: 88-121 Date/time of incident: 6/24, 5 pm Date/time received: 6/27, 10:30 am Park: Big Cypress Location: Upper Wagon Wheel Road Reported by: Don Russell, RAD, SERO Received by: Jon Anglin, RAD, WASO Incident Summary The Drug Enforcement Agency, acting on inside information, requested the assistance of NPS rangers in the seizure of 400 kilograms of cocaine (valued at $7 million) that was to be flown into the park. A plane from the Bananas landed, dropped off the contraband and departed. DBA agents, Collier County Sheriff's deputies and NPS rangers then arrested 4 foreign nationals waiting to pick up the drugs. The cocaine and 3 vehicles were seized in the incident. RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Fatality Log number: 88-122 Date/time of incident: 6/25, 11:30 pm Date/time received: 6/27, 10:30 am Park: Natchez Trace Location: North of Grindstone Ford Reported by: Don Russell, RAD, SERO Received by: Jon Anglin, RAD, WASO Incident Summary C.A.M., 22 of Jackson, Mississippi, apparently fell asleep while driving, left the roadway and rolled his vehicle. The vehicle came to rest out of view from the roadway. C.A.M. attempted to exit the vehicle but was unable to due to injuries sustained in the accident. S.C., 18, also of Jackson, Mississippi, a passenger in the vehicle, was able to crawl to the roadway where she was picked up by a passing motorist at 4:30 am on the 26th. S.C. was taken to the Rocky Springs Ranger Station where she reported the accident. Rangers responded and found C.A.M. pulseless at 5 am. The Claiborne County Coroner responded and pronounced him dead at the scene. S.C. was transported to the hospital and admitted with broken ribs and other injuries. Statements made by S.C. and evidence at the scene indicate that C.A.M. had been drinking prior to the accident. RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Drowning Log number: 88-123 Date/time of incident: 6/25f 7:40 pm Date/time received: 6/27, 2 pm Park: Chickasaw Location: Buckhorn Reported by: Charlotte Lehman, RAD, SWRO Received by: Jon Anglin, RAD, WASO Incident Summary J.G.R., 33, of Tecumseh, Oklahoma was swimming alone while his daughter and a friend watched from the shore. J.G.R. indicated in jest on several occasions that he was in trouble. He swam into deeper water to retrieve a ski kicked off by a friend skiing near him. While attempting to retrieve the ski J.G.R. began yelling to his daughter for help. She thought he was only playing again and ignored his cries for help. Several minutes later she realized that he really was in trouble and ran for help. Park rangers responded and found J.G.R. floating face down in the water. CPR was administered and he was transported to the Sulphur Oklahoma hospital. When he arrived at the hospital J.G.R. had a pulse but was not breathing. He was later transferred to a hospital in Oklahoma City where he died that evening.
