Day/date: July 18, 1988 RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Search Log number: 88-144 Date/time of incident: 7/14 Date/time received: 7/18, 11 am Park: Sequoia Location: Mineral King Reported by: Herb Gercke, RAD, WRO Received by: Jon Anglin, RAD, WASO Incident Summary The body of J.N., 35, of Malibu, California was discovered on the 16th after an extensive search in the Mineral King area of the park. J.N., a summer caretaker in Silver City, a private community within the park, was last seen on the 12th when he left his residence to go hiking. His wife reported him missing nearly 48 hours later on the 14th. Park officials initiated search efforts on Thursday, the 14th. As of the 15th the park was using 19 ground searchers and one dog in the search. J.N. apparently died of injuries sustained during a fall. RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Grizzly Bear Fatality Log number: 88-145 Date/time of incident: 7/17 Date/time received: 7/18, 12:30 pm Park: Glacier Location: Granite Park Chalet Reported by: Dick Powell, RAD, EMRO Received by: Jon Anglin, RAD, WASO Incident Summary A young adult female grizzly died while being relocated from the Granite Park Chalet area. The bear was tranquilized with M-99 and then transported by sling load to the relocation area. Upon arrival at the relocation area, the bear was checked and found to be dead. It is suspected that the bear may have suffocated during transport or that she received an accidental over dose. The University of Montana has the carcass and while do an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The park is conducting a board of review in the incident. Follow-up; 7/25 Autoposy results indicate that the bear died as a result of a reaction caused by sensitivity to the tranquilizer M-99. The death was not due to an over dose or suffocation. RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident types Drowning Log number: 88-146 Date/time of incident: 7/16, 4:30 pm Date/time received: 7/18, 8 am Park: Delaware Water Gap Location: Bushkill Access Area Reported by: Steve Alscher, RAD, MARO Received by: Bill Halainen, RAD, WASO Incident Summary S.W., 18, of East Stroudsburg, PA, attempted to swim across the Delaware River from the Bushkill Access Area to the New Jersey side late on the afternoon of the 16th. He apparently tired about half way across, called for help, then turned back toward the Pennsylvania shore. A park visitor swam to S.W. with a tube, but was unable to hold onto him. The visitor made three unsuccessful dives in an attempt to rescue S.W.. Three divers from the park recovered the boy's body several hours later near the point where he was last seen. RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Fatality Log number: 88-147 Date/time of incident: 7/17, 5:50 pm Date/time received: 7/18, 15:30 pm Park: Scotts Bluff Location: North Overlook Reported by: John Townsend, RAD, MWRO Received by: Jon Anglin, RAD, WASO Incident Summary R.R., 19, of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska fell approximately 225 feet to his death near the North Overlook in the park. R.R. and two companions reportedly ignored signs advising visitors to stay on the trail near the overlook. Other visitors observed R.R. and his companions "horsing around" near the cliff edge just prior to the fall. The body was recovered by rangers with assistance provided by the Scotts Bluff Sheriff's Office, Nebraska State Patrol and the Gering Fire Department. Blood alcohol tests indicate that R.R. had been drinking.
