INCIDENTS
89-5 - Cape Cod - Theft of Government Property
On the morning of January 7th, rangers discovered that the sculpture of
Guglielmo Marconi had been stolen from the historic wireless station in South
Wellfleet. The cast-bronze statue, which has been valued at $25,000, was given
to the park in 1974 by a group of Italian industrialists as part of a year-long
observance of the 100th anniversary of Marconi's birth. The sculpture stood at
the ocean-front site of the station from which Marconi made the first successful
exchange of trans-Atlantic wireless telegraph messages in January of 1903. Park
rangers, FBI agents and the Wellfleet Police Department are investigating the
theft. (Tony Bonano, CR, CACO).
89-6 - Organ Pipe Cactus - Theft of Government Property
An NPS-owned 1983 GMC 2-ton truck with a trash compacter was stolen from the
park's maintenance yard on the evening of January 12th. The vehicle was last
seen by a ranger patrol at 7:30 p.m., and was discovered missing at 9:30 p.m.
The vehicle was tracked to a point where it crossed the border into Mexico. The
FBI and local and Mexican authorities have been notified. The value of the truck
was placed at $13,000. This is the third truck stolen from the park in recent
months. (Herb Gercke, WRO).
FIELD REPORTS
A man who tipped federal agents to the whereabouts in 1981 of an escaped spy
has been charged with the murder of Brent Jacobsen, a commissioned USFS
employee from Idaho Panhandle NF. Joseph Pratt, 27, and his brother James,
29, surrendered to authorities shortly after Thursday's gun battle in which
Jacobsen was killed. The two had botched a robbery of a home which netted
them a total of $12. When officers arrived at the scene, the men sped away,
firing several times at the pursuing vehicle. The Pratts abandoned their
car after it ran into a snowbank, then fled on foot into the woods.
Officers from several agencies tracked the men Wednesday night, resuming the
search at daybreak on Thursday. Jacobsen was killed just as tracking teams
were being recalled because of darkness. Joseph Pratt was charged with
first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, first-
degree burglary, robbery, two counts of second-degree kidnapping and two
counts of aggravated assault. Pratt had received a reward for turning in
Christopher Boyce in 1981. At that time, Boyce was an escapee from prison,
where he was serving a term for selling CIA satellite information to the
Soviets. His story has been chronicled in Robert Lindsey's "The Falcon and
the Snowman" and "The Flight of the Falcon". The Pratts had received
immunity from prosecution for their testimony against Boyce, although the
two also testified that they had taken part in a series of robberies that
Boyce had masterminded in 1980 and 1981 in Washington, Idaho and Montana.
