RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION
MORNING REPORT
Attention: Directorate
Regional and Park Chief Rangers, USPP, BIFC, FLETC
CC: RAD Information Net
Day/date: Tuesday, January 24, 1989
INCIDENTS
89-10 - Channel Islands - Plane Crash
On January 5th, a singleengine, fixed-wing aircraft being flown by 76-year-old
J.T. of Los Angeles disappeared and was declared missing by the
FAA. The wreckage of the plane was found on the 19th in a deep, narrow and
steep canyon on West Anacapa Island. Park rangers extricated J.T.'s
body from the plane with difficulty; the aircraft itself is to be airlifted
out. The cause of the crash has not been determined. (Herb Gercke, WRO).
89-11 - Natchez Trace - Suicide
Late on the morning of January 15th, rangers found 34-year-old R.G.
of Ridgeland, Mississippi, shot in the chest with a 20 gauge shotgun
at Ross Barnett Reservoir Overlook. A note was found near R.G. which
contained his relatives' telephone numbers and other information suggesting
that he'd attempted suicide. Further investigation revealed that R.G.
had a number of business failures, was heavily in debt and had a history of
previous suicide attempts using drugs; he also tested positive for the AID'S
virus. Rangers at the scene of the incident had taken the precaution of
using latex gloves while investigating the death and were not infected.
R.G. died yesterday morning of injuries received from the shotgun blast.
