FIELD REPORTS
At our request, the regional office in Alaska queried Alaskan parks about
the effects the record cold weather has had on their operation. Overall,
visitation has not been impacted, since it's low at this time of the year.
But some areas are working to provide assistance to local people and others
are "just sort of shut down for awhile trying to get heating equipment and
vehicles moving." Here's a park-by-park summary:
- Bering Land Bridge - One house with frozen sewers and a vehicle out of
commission.
- Denali - Several employees have not been able to get to work. The park
is starting to get a van ready to make a run to town to resupply food
stocks. Temperatures are at - 50 degrees F or lower. Employees are
being allowed administrative leave. There are some freezing problems
in houses, but nothing serious.
- Gates of the Arctic - Administrative leave has been granted since the
temperatures have reached - 60 degrees F. Three employees were
stranded in Fairbanks for several days, but are now back in Bettles.
- Glacier Bay - Extreme cold is just beginning to settle in; the temperature
early this week was - 8 degrees F with a 30 - 40 mph wind. The park
also has four feet of snow, an unusually high amount.
- Katmai - The park had a new record low of - 48 degrees F.
- Kenai Fjords - The headquarters building is frozen. A ranger is
isolated at Exit Glacier. The park's chief ranger and a maintenance
worker were on the park boat and had to take shelter in Falls Bay because
of the cold, but they have returned safely to port.
- Lake Clark - Members of the park staff are helping local residents
cut wood for a family sick with the flu. The park maintenance shop
is being used to thaw and repair equipment. The temperature early
in the week was - 56 degrees F.
- Sitka - The park is experiencing power outages.
- Wrangell - St. Elias - The temperature early this week was - 71
degrees F, and high winds were reported.
- Yukon - Charley Rivers - The temperature was - 50 degrees F.
