No incidents reported.

FIRE ACTIVITY

The "NPS wildland Fire Situation Report" for the month of January has been
released. Fire danger was reported as low in all areas except for MWR (low
to high), SER (low to high) and SWR (low to high). One park - Big Bend -
reported extreme fire danger. There were two wildfire reported, both at
Indiana Dunes; a total of 2 acres was burned. There was also a prescribed
fire of 2,700 acres at Big Cypress. Little fire activity is expected in the
coming month.

OFFICE NOTES

1) Western Region's Employee Assistance Program goes into effect in
February. The contract allows any employee or member of his or her
immediate family seven free, confidential counseling visits each per year.
These visits can be for any reason, including drugs, alcohol, grief, or
financial difficulties. It also includes a mandatory post traumatic stress
(PTSD) debriefing program. Interested persons should contact either Herb
Gercke or Peg Wilson in WRO. (Butch Farabee, RAD, WASO).

2) Secretary Lujan was confirmed yesterday by a 100 - 0 vote in the Senate.
His appointment had been unanimously approved by the Senate Energy and
Natural Resources Committee on Wednesday. The Secretary will be speaking to
all employees hear at Main Interior at 11 a.m. today. (Associated Press).

Actions No. 88-3549 and 88-3518, United States District Court for the
District of Columbia, January 30, 1989. Sent today by regional mail to all
regional chief rangers. Contains ruling on DOT drug testing program.
