RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION
MORNING REPORT
Attention: Directorate
Regional and Park Chief Rangers, USPP, BIFC, FLETC
CC: RAD Information Net
Day/date: Friday, February 17, 1989
INCIDENTS
89-22 - Yosemite - Rock Slide
Sometime during the night of February 14th, approximately five tons of rock
and debris slid 600' downslope onto a 60-yard segment of Highway 120 8/10 of
a mile below the tunnel. There were no injuries. Major clean-up operations
are underway to open the road prior to this holiday weekend and the onset of
a forecasted snow storm. (Herb Gercke, WRO).
89-23 - Sequoia/Kings Canyon - Structural Fire
A fire broke out in the park's SAR cache at 2:30 a.m. on the 16th and
totally destroyed the facility and its contents. Total damage has been
estimated at $20,000 for the SAR equipment and $10,000 for other equipment
and the structure itself. The source of ignition appears to have been an
electrical failure in a water heater in the building. One park ranger was
hospitalized for a minor case of smoke inhalation. (Herb Gercke, WRO).
OFFICE NOTES
1) On Tuesday, we advised that Team Resource instructors awaiting receipt of
a lesson plans diskette from Mather would receive it in Wordperfect 4.2
unless Dale Ditmanson at the center is advised that you need it in 5.0. The
information was inadvertently reversed - it will be sent in 5.0 unless you
specify that you need it in 4.2. (Larry Belli, RAD, WASO).
2) On the morning of March 6th, several Ranger Activities staffers will be
meeting with the chief of law enforcement and the chief warden for Parks
Canada. If you're in a park or regional office that has frequent dealings
with Parks Canada or the warden service, we'd be interested in hearing about
any topics you might like discussed at the meeting. (Bill Halainen, RAD,
WASO).
STAFF STATUS
Kreis and Anglin on leave, Dabney in Seattle.
