INCIDENTS

89-34 - Cumberland Island - Fatal Aircraft Accident

On the afternoon of March 4th, a twin-engined Beechcraft crashed into an
unoccupied private residence on Little Cumberland Island, which is at the
north end of the park. The pilot, S.R. of Brunswick, Georgia, was
killed on impact. The ceiling was very low at the time, and this appears to
have been the major contributing factor in the accident. The Camden County
Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation. (Bill Springer,
RAD/SERO).

89-35 - Grand Canyon - Earthquake

A moderate earthquake shook the Grand Canyon just before 6 p.m. on March
th, and was followed by an aftershock of approximately the same strength
nine hours later. Neither caused any damage or injuries. The epicenter of
the quakes, which registered 4.0 and 3.9, respectively, on the Richter
scale, was near Grand Canyon Village. A park spokesman reported that the
first quake lasted only five or six seconds. An earthquake of 3.5 on the
Richter scale can cause slight damage in the local area; an earthquake with
a magnitude of 4 can cause moderate damage. (Associated Press).

FIRE ACTIVITY

The Double Fire, located in the Lincoln National Forest and Carlsbad
Caverns, was controlled by heavy snow on the 4th. The fire burned a total
of 1,180 acres, only 25 of which were in the park. According to reports,
the fire was still smoking at the end of the weekend. The primary resources
used on the fire were two crews and four engines, along with miscellaneous
overhead. The fire was started by lightning on March 2nd. This is the fire
which was previously reported to have been burning in Guadalupe Mountains.

OFFICE NOTES

1) Andy Ringgold, Mike Healy, Larry Belli, Butch Farabee and Bill Halainen
met with Claude Scott and Walt Leigh of Parks Canada yesterday to discuss
current efforts to expand and modernize law enforcement operations in the
Canadian parks. Both Scott and Leigh are former members of the RCMP and
were selected last year to implement the law enforcement requirements of the
National Parks Act of 1988. The exchange was animated and productive. We
will be working on establishing closer ties between our respective offices
in the future. (Bill Halainen, RAD/WASO).

2) Several people have asked how to obtain a nationwide listing of local
CompuServe phone numbers (known as "nodes"). The process is simple: Log on

to CompuServe. When you're prompted for an ID number, enter 74,74 instead
of your normal ID; when asked for a password, enter NETWORK. You'll then
get a menu which will offer you several options for phone listings. (Bill
Halainen, RAD/WASO).

STAFF STATUS

Dabney on leave; Andy Ringgold is acting division chief. Hodapp
in Denver on aircraft and fire policy meetings. It's uncertain who'll be
in today, as Washington experienced a fairly significant ice storm last
night and is getting a steady snow at present.
