INCIDENTS
89-51 - Lake Mead - Fatality
The body of 42-year-old S.K. of Arcadia, California, was found in a
vehicle at the Lake Mead Marina parking lot. The cause of death was
apparently a single shot in the neck from a .22 caliber pistol. The death
is tentatively listed as a suicide and is under investigation. (LAME
dispatch, via Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO).
FIRE ACTIVITY
1) Fire Situation
a) National Park Service
- McKittrick Fire, Guadalupe Mountains (3,215 acres) - The fire is reported
to be contained this morning. There's no estimate available of the total
acreage which burned within the park.
b) Other Agency
- Steel #2 Fire, Daniel Boone NF (250 Acres) - The fire is burning in heavy
fuels in steep terrain. Containment is estimated for2 pm this afternoon.
The Daniel Boone is immediately adjacent to Big South Fork, but there is
no indication of any fire activity in the park.
2) Analysis - Fire activity is continuing in the southeast. No resource
shortages are occurring.
3) Prognosis - An increase in fire activity is expected, with winds and
warmer temperatures forecast.
OFFICE NOTES
1) The detail which came in to RAD this week - Ron Kirbo, CACA, Steve
Chaney, MACA, and Kay Rhode, WICA - to work with the inter-departmental
working group on Cave Resources Protection Act regulations concluded its
efforts yesterday. Draft regulations will be circulated to regions for
review before being published in the Federal Register sometime toward the
end of April. (Larry Belli, RAD/WASO).
2) Jim Lee has assumed the duties of FLETC program specialist, with
responsibility for matters pertaining to the Seasonal Law Enforcement
Training Program (SLETP). Jim can be reached at FTS 523-5280 (202-523-5280)

of Employee Development, 1100 L Street, NW, PO Box 37127, Washington, DC
20013-7127. Attention: SLETP Program Specialist. If you have questions

STAFF STATUS
Dabney on AL; Andy Ringgold is the acting division chief. Kreis on lieu
day. Healy in later this morning.
Next week: Belli in Denver all week with NPS-77 grazing work group; Loach at
COLO on Monday on NPS-53 and on AL remainder of week. Dabney back in the
office.
