INCIDENTS
89-37 - Denali - Follow-up on Climbing Deaths
Yesterday, we reported that the recovery team would be picked up by a fixed
wing aircraft at 19,800'. That should have been 9,800'.
89-59 - Kenai Fjords - Oil Spill
The nine-member Type I interagency overhead team that was yesterday reported
to be in Valdez to assist with the oil spill has now gone to Kenai Fjords to
help the park prepare for the impact of the spreading spill, which should
reach the park within the next two to four days. The team will augment the
Kenai Fjords staff, and will be available for use by the Coast Guards' on-
scene coordinator. The team will be reporting to the park superintendent,
the Alaska Regional Office and the Interior Department's regional
environmental officer. They will also coordinate the monitoring of park
resources and document pre-spill and post-spill conditions. (Dave Ames,

2) Fire Activity - 124 fires for 1,356 acres in last 24 hours.

4) Analysis - No significant fire activity reported.
5) Prognosis - No significant activity or resource shortages anticipated.

OFFICE NOTES
1) SPECIAL NOTICE: James M. Ridenour, 47, former director of the Indiana
Department of Natural Resources, has been selected by Secretary Lujan to be
the 13th director of the National Park Service. Director Mott has submitted
his resignation, effective April 15th. Ridenour is presently a research
program coordinator at the Natural Resources Research Institute at Purdue
University, a position he's held since leaving the Department of Natural
Resources in February. While director of that department, Ridenour managed
the state system of parks, forests, reservoirs and fish and wildlife areas.
He was also responsible for state museums and memorials, historic resources,
coal mine reclamation and protection of Indiana's soil, forests, water and
wildlife. Before taking the Indiana position in 1981, Ridenour was director
of administration for the Great Lakes Chemical Corporation. From 1975 to
1978, he was director of state services for the Council of State
Governments. Ridenour was born in Wabash, Indiana, and holds bachelors and
masters degrees in Parks and Recreation from Indiana University. He also
earned a masters degree in public administration from the University of
Colorado. (DOT News Release).
2) Walt Dabney will join representatives from DOT (USPP, BIA, BLM) and other
agencies in an all-day meeting today with drug "czar" William Bennett.

3) Andy Ringgold, Dave Butts and Mike Healy met yesterday with USPS law
enforcement staff in Washington to begin development of an agreement
pertaining to cross-deputization of NPS and USPS law enforcement personnel.
The USPS will prepare a draft that addresses national fire emergencies and
that will serve as an umbrella to facilitate the development of local
park/forest agreements for routine and emergency mutual aid. We'll keep you
