RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION
MORNING REPORT
Attention: Directorate
Regional and Park Chief Rangers, USPP, BIFC, FLETC
CC: RAD Information Net
Day/date: Monday, April 3, 1989
INCIDENTS
89-37 - Denali - Final Follow-up on Climbing Deaths
On March 30th, the recovery team reached the bodies of the three Japanese
climbers and moved them to the camp at 17,200'. The bodies were flown off
the mountain on Saturday, and the recovery team was to have completed its
descent and returned to Talkeetna yesterday. (Message from Tom Griffiths,
CR, DENA to RAD/ARO and RAD/WASO).
89-59 - Kenai Fjords - Follow-up on Oil Spill
As of late Friday, the Type I incident command team had arrived in Seward
and was establishing staging and command areas. A spill response plan
showing general areas of concern for park resources had been completed;
detailed maps showing rookeries, marine mammal haul-outs and other high-
priority resources were also being prepared. The Service's DeHavilland
Beaver was being converted from skis to floats by the Office of Aircraft
Services in Anchorage for use by the incident command team, and a Grumman
Goose was being held at OAS for possible use. According to a Thursday
report by NCAA, chances are good that the oil spill will not reach the park.
Winds were said to be the most important variable, since a wind shift would
be required to move oil from the Gulf current to the park's shoreline. The
Coast Guard was about to move booms to Seward and was considering moving
some operations there as well, since the town is close to the leading edge
of the oil. (Dave Ames, Acting Regional Director, ARO; John Quinley, Public
Affairs, ARO).
89-60 - Everglades - Outbreak of Fatal Disease
U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) doctors and Dade County epidemiologists
are investigating an outbreak of serious intestinal disorders on the
Miccosukkee permit area within the park. So far, the outbreak has taken the
life of one six-year-old Miccosukkee girl and left nearly 30 others in local
hospitals and clinics. The cause of the outbreak has not yet been cultured
or identified, nor has the autopsy report been announced. As a
precautionary measure, the park has shut down the public drinking facilities
until further notice at the Tamiami Ranger Station and Shark Valley Visitor
Center, both of which are served by the Miccosukkee's water system. Ron
Speedy, the Service's PHS representative, has been notified and has been
briefed by his USPHS counterparts who are on scene conducting the
investigation. (Scott Erickson, CR, EVER, via RAD/SERO).
