Day/date: Tuesday, April 18, 1989
INCIDENTS
89-70 - Point Reyes - Helicopter Crash, No Injuries
On the morning of April 14th, a Hiller 12E which was being
employed by Crawley Maritime to recover a salt barge on a reef in
the park suffered a power loss and crashed onto the reef. The
pilot, 42-year-old G.H. of Junction City, Oregon, was not
injured, and was able to walk the hundred yards to shore because
the tide was out. Although the helicopter was demolished, no
fuel or oil spilled into the ocean. (Ann Betus, RAD/WRO).
89-71 - Haleakala - Drowning
Just before midnight on the 13th, K.F., 35, of Lahaina,
Hawaii, joined a fellow camper in an attempt to cross a
rain-swollen stream near their campsite at Oheo. Her companion heard
her call for help once before she disappeared. A search was
begun that night, but was suspended at 2 a.m. The search
continued the next day, and K.F.'s body was found by NFS divers
on the morning of the 15th. Foul play has been ruled out. (Ann
Betus, RAD/WRO).
