INCIDENTS
89-110 - Glen Canyon - Follow-up on Diving Fatality
On the afternoon of June 1st, divers found the body of T.N. located
on a shelf 119 feet under the lake's surface after only 30 minutes of
searching. The body was directly below the point where T.N. entered the
water after his dive from the 70-foot-high cliff above the lake on May 29th.
The body was located by a Phantom 500 remote control submersible vehicle
equipped with a video camera. The vehicle and divers were from the Maricopa
County sheriff's office; the operation was funded by the K.C. Johnson
Foundation of Phoenix, which was established by the parents of a boy who
drowned in Lake Powell and who was recovered only after an extensive,
week-long search. (John Benjamin, GLCA, via CompuServe message to RAD/WASO and
RAD/RMRO).
89-116 - Santa Monica Mountains - Toxic Spill
Rangers on patrol in Trancos Canyon on June 1st discovered a 20-foot-square
area covered with unidentified chemicals. Specialists from the Los Angeles
county fire department were called in, and they identified the several
substances found there as chemicals employed in the illicit manufacture of
PCP. The chemicals were also determined to be extremely hazardous. The
park contacted the National Response Center, and were forwarded to the
California office of the Environmental Protection Agency. EPA employed
"Super Fund" money to hire a contractor to clean up the area, and work was
to have been completed at the site by the afternoon of the 2nd. (Ernie
Quintana, CR, SAMO, via CompuServe message from RAD/WRO).
