FIRE ACTIVITY

1) FIRE SITUATION (Planning Level II)

a) NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

* DOF #457 Fire - State of Florida/Everglades (Florida) - 14,000 acres:

The fire, which started on June 13th on state lands in the East Everglades,
has now burned 8,000 acres of state land and 6,000 acres in Shark Valley in
Everglades National Park. Hot and dry conditions with severe fire behavior
are causing control problems, and structures and unique ecological features
in Shark Valley are threatened. A Type II team has been assigned to the
fire; five hot shot crews arrived yesterday, five more arrive today, and two
Type I tankers and two Type II helicopters are on order. Incident command
is setting up operations in park buildings at Shark Valley. The forecast
today is for winds from the southeast at five to 10 mph, temperatures in the
low 90's, and humidity around 50%. There's no estimate of containment.

b) OTHER AGENCY

* Current Creek Mountain Fire - State of Utah (Utah) - 225 acres:

Low relative humidities and rough terrain are hampering control efforts.
The fire is posing minimal threats to cabins in the area. Estimated
containment: 6/19.

* Meason Fire - Gila NF (New Mexico) - 400 acres:

A Type I team is managing the fire. Poor access, erratic winds and dry
fuels are hampering control efforts. No estimate of containment.

* Citrus Fire - City of Fontana (California) - 200 acres:

Winds are hampering control efforts. No estimate of containment.

2) FIRE ACTIVITY - 99 fires for 9,625 acres in last 24 hours.

3) ANALYSIS - Fire activity is expected to continue in the southwest, Utah
and Florida. High demand for local resources during afternoons is expected
to continue in the southwest.

4) PROGNOSIS - Fire activity is expected to continue in the southwest, Utah
and Florida. A red flag watch for windy, dry and very hot (temperatures in
the low 100's) conditions has been posted for today in Arizona.

(NIFCC Intelligence Section, 0530 MDT, 6/19/89; supplemental information on
