INCIDENTS
89-165 - Glen Canyon - Assault on Ranger
At approximately 10 p.m. on the 2nd, ranger Jon Crichfield was working Lone
Rock Beach when he heard loud voices and saw what appeared to be several
persons holding a young man back from chasing another person. Crichfield
separated the young man - later identified as 19-year-old L.H. of
St. George, Utah - from the group. Although he appeared to be intoxicated,
L.H. was initially calm and cooperative; within moments, though, he
became violent, told Crichfield that he was going to kill him, and yanked
Crichfield's service revolver from its holster. Crichfield regained control
of his weapon by grasping the cylinder of the revolver, pivoting to the side
and striking L.H.'s forearm with his fist. L.H. then fled down the
beach. Crichfield pursued him, knocked him down, then was able to control
and restrain L.H. when L.H. again lunged at him. L.H. was placed
under arrest, and charges are now pending against him. It appears that
L.H. was able to gain control of the weapon by unintentionally releasing
the thumblatch on Crichfield's breakfront holster as he grabbed the
revolver's stock. Tests of the Bianchi holster (model #2800, "The Judge")
indicate that the weapon could not have been pulled free without prior
release of the thumblatch. (Larry Clark, CR, GLCA, via CompuServe message
to RAD/WASO and RAD/RMRO).
89-166 - Lake Mead - Waterskiing Fatality
On June 22nd, 70-year-old R.H. of Littletown, Colorado, was
waterskiing on Lake Mead when he fell while coming to shore. He was
medevaced to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
(Telephone report from RAD/WRO).
89-167 - Saguaro - Hiking Fatality
R.F. of Garfield Heights, Ohio, signed out for a day hike in the
park on the 26th. When rangers found his rental car unmoved and at the same
location on the following day, a search was initiated. R.F.'s body was
found on the morning of the 28th on the Freeman Homestead Trail. The cause
of death has not yet been determined. (Telephone report from RAD/WRO).
89-168 - Grand Canyon - Hiking Fatality
On July 2nd, 27-year-old A.K.G. of Fremont, California, died
of heat stroke on the Kaibab Trail while hiking with a group from the rim to
Phantom Ranch. (Telephone report from RAD/WRO).
89-169 - Dinosaur - Diving Fatality
On the evening of July 1st, S.D. of Denver, Colorado, broke his neck
while diving off an eight-foot embankment into the Yampa River at Cross
Mountain Overlook. Bystanders attempted CPR, but without success. The
Yampa is clear and only two and a half-feet deep at the point where Duncan
entered the water. (Telephone report from RAD/RMRO).
89-170 - Indiana Dunes - Drowning
On the morning of June 29th, lifeguards received a report that a child was
missing from a group that was located about halfway between the Wells Street
Beach lifeguard stand and the West Beach bathhouse. Rangers were notified,
and a search was conducted by using a human chain along the beach. The body
of D.S., 8, of Sauk Village, Illinois, was found about 45 minutes
later, and was transported to Gary Methodist Hospital where he was
pronounced dead on arrival. D.S. was part of a church group and was
attending a day camp on the beach. The group apparently arrived before the
guarded beach opened and set up in the unguarded and isolated area. A red
flag indicating high wave conditions was posted on the lead lifeguard stand
at the time of the incident. (Dick Littlefield, CR, INDU, via telefax to
RAD/MWRO and RAD/WASO).
FIRE ACTIVITY
1) FIRE SITUATION (Planning Level III)
a) NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
* No significant fires reported.
b) OTHER AGENCY
* Box Canyon Fire - Craig District, BLM (Colorado) - 1,800 acres:
Estimated containment: July 5th.

A Type I Team (Denton) is managing the fire. No estimate of containment.
* Uinta Canyon Fire - Ashley NF (Utah) - 1,300 acres:
A Type I Team (Russell) has been assigned to the fire. Thousand-hour
fuel moistures have been recorded as low as 8%, and temperatures are
extremely high. These conditions and rugged terrain are hampering
containment efforts. There's no estimate of containment.
* Ann's Fire - Bridger-Teton NF (Wyoming) - 600 acres:
A Type I Team (Raddatz) is en route to the fire. There's no estimate of
containment.

A Type II Team has been assigned to the fire. There's no estimate of
containment.
2) FIRE ACTIVITY - 168 fires for 12,496 acres in last 24 hours.
3) ANALYSIS - Fire activity continues to increase throughout the West and
Alaska. Mobilization of resources is on-going, with a large number of
airtankers, Type II helicopters and Type I crews committed. Record-
breaking temperatures are being recorded in the Southwest, and current
forecasts call for no relief from these conditions.
4) PROGNCSIS - Widespread activity is expected to continue until there is
a change in the weather.
