INCIDENTS

89-173 - Guilford Courthouse - Vandalism

Sometime between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. on the night of July 4th, a vandal or
vandals completely demolished the monument to General Nathaniel Green and
badly damaged five other monuments. Graffiti spray painted on the Green
monument read "1889- 1989 G.P.D." and "brutality". Since a picture of the
town's police department standing in front of the Green monument had
appeared on the cover of local, phone books this year, it is thought that the
vandalism was directed at the Greensboro Police Department. A team from
Southeast Regional Office's cultural resources division is en route to the
park to assess the scope and nature of the damage, and the NPS, FBI and
Greensboro PD are investigating the incident. (Chuck Taylor, CR, GUCO, via
telephone report from Bill Sturgeon, RAD/SERO).

89-174 - Santa Monica Mountains - Toxic Spill

On July 4th, rangers discovered the third clandestine drug lab found in
Encinal Canyon in the last month. The last patrol through the area had been
on the 2nd. Although federal and state environmental agencies have cleaned
up the spilled chemicals and mixing barrels on past occasions, they have
declined to aid the park this time. Each of the three laboratories found in
the canyon has been capable of producing over $1 million worth of PCP.
(Ernie Ojuintana, CR, SAMO, via CompuServe message from Herb Gercke,
RAD.WRI).

89-175 - Great Smokies - Fatality Caused by Falling Tree

On the afternoon of July 5th, a vehicle heading north on US 441 near
the visitor center at Oconaluftee was hit by 10-inch diameter tree which fell
without warning. The driver, 40-year-old R.A. of Saraland, Alabama,
was killed when a limb ripped through the top of his car; his passenger,
29-year-old C.S., was slightly injured. (Pete Hart, CR, GRSM,
via CompuServe message from Bill Sturgeon, RAD/SERO).

historic sites are threatened. No estimate of containment.

2) FIRE ACTIVITY - 289 fires for 22,750 acres in last 24 hours.

3) ANALYSIS - There are multiple fires burning in the southwest. Continued
lightning activity has resulted in heavy competition for limited
resources from other geographic areas. Red flag watches have been posted
for the southern Sierras and southern half of Nevada for dry, high-
based thunderstorms on Saturday.

4) PROGNOSIS - Fire activity is expected to increase as high temperatures,
extreme conditions, lightning and shortages of resources continue.

fires from Associated Press stories).
