INCIDENTS

89-191 - Hawaii Volcanoes - Hurricane Delilia

The hurricane, which was headed for the coast of Hawaii on the 19th, did not
make landfall; although there were heavy rains over the island, no damage
was inflicted on the park. (CompuServe message from RAD/WRO).

89-192 - Yosemite - Ascent of El Capitan by Paraplegic

On Monday, climbers Mike Corbett and Mark Wellman, a 29-year-old paraplegic,
were tackling the 600-foot Groove pitch on their way toward the 3,593-foot
summit of the rock. The pair had already climbed about 2,000 feet since
they began the climb. If successful, Wellman will become the first
paraplegic to climb one of the world's most challenging cliffs. The two
should complete the climb late today or early Wednesday. Wellman, who is
using his arms to make the ascent, has estimated that it will take him 7,000
pull-ups to reach the top. Wellman was left paralyzed from the waist down
when he fell 50 feet during a climb in 1982. (Associated Press report).

89-193 - Rocky Mountain - Fatality

On the evening of July 20th, rangers noted the presence of a car with no
backcountry permit sticker in the parking area at the Long's Peak ranger
station; when it was found there again on the 21st, a search was initiated
for the owner, 19-year-old E.C. of Lakewood, Colorado. His body was
found on Saturday morning in the vicinity of the Trough, a heavily-used
hiking route on the west side of Long's Peak. It appears that E.C. fell
over 500 feet from a point near the summit. Further investigation revealed
that the death was probably a suicide, however. Empty sleeping pill vials,
which were determined to have held about 100 pills, were found in E.C.'s
car, and his roommate at the University of Colorado said that E.C. had
been under a lot of pressure and was scheduled to see a doctor. E.C.
also had personal problems, and had withdrawn all his money from his bank.
(CompuServe message from John Chapman, RAD/RMRO).

89-194 - Anacostia Park (NCP) - Drowning

Late on the evening of the 22nd, J.R., 40, attempted to make a U-
turn while driving on a road in the park, lost control of her vehicle and
slid into the Anacostia River. Five men went into the river to help her.
Although J.R. was rescued, one of the men, as yet unidentified, could
not be found, and a search of the area was initiated. His body was
discovered by officers early the next morning. (CompuServe message from
Dave Blackburn, RAD/NCRO).

89-195 - Glen Canyon - MVA with Fatality

Shortly after noon on the 23rd, a Ford Bronco driven by M.S. of
Cypress, California, failed to negotiate a curve on the Burr Trail seven
miles west of the Bullfrog ranger station, crossed the on-coming traffic
lane, left the gravel road and rammed a large sandstone outcropping.
Although M.S. was uninjured and his wife G. and one passenger, D.D.,
received minor injuries, 26-year-old M.E. of Huntington
Beach, California, sustained severe head and neck injuries and died in Page
Hospital later that day. The S. family were wearing seatbelts, but D.D.
and M.E. were not. Alcohol was involved. M.S. was arrested by
Garfield County sheriff's officers and will be charged with vehicular
homicide. (Larry Clark, CR, GLCA, via CompuServe messages to RAD/RMRO and
RAD/WASO).
