No new incident reports received.

FIRE ACTIVITY

1) FIRE SITUATION: Planning Level IV.

Although light rain, higher humidities and cooler weather have allowed
progress on fires, some of the storms which brought precipitation also
brought lightning - approximately 47,000 strikes were recorded throughout
the West on Tuesday. The new starts caused by some of these strikes,
including 16 in Yosemite and eight in Sequoia/Kings Canyon, have so far been
held by initial attack.

The Multi-Agency Coordinating (MAC) Group at BIFC is discontinuing evening
meetings. They will not be resumed unless the situation takes a turn for
the worse.

Some demobilization is occurring. Plans were to demob 35 crews yesterday
and another 18 tomorrow. The two battalions from Fort Lewis are slated to
be released today. As of yesterday, the NPS had 736 firefighters and 191
overhead personnel committed to fires.

  Forestry.
- Fires - Asterisk indicates new fire.
- Areas - T1 and T2 indicate assigned Type I and Type II Teams.
- Contain - Containment dates are estimates; "none" means no estimate;
  "yes" means the fire has been contained.

3) NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

Current fire danger readings in the parks are as follows:

- Extreme: Fort Laramie NHS (Wyoming); Glen Canyon NRA (Arizona); Great
Sand Dunes NM (New Mexico); Lava Beds NM (California).

- Very High: Canyonlands NP (Utah); Arches NP (Utah); Natural Bridges NM
(Utah); Fossil. Butte NM (Wyoming); Hawaii Volcanoes NP (Hawaii);
Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP (Hawaii); Pinnacles NM (California).

- High: Twenty-four Western parks report high fire dangers.

* Sequoia and Kings Canyon:

The park has had eight lightning-caused fires over the last two
days, but all are less than an acre in size and are being held
by initial attack.

* Yosemite:

The park reports that 16 fires were started by lightning on the
8th. All are less than an acre in size and are being held by
initial attack.

4) FIRE ACTIVITY - 711 fires for 8,690 acres in last 24 hours.

5) ANALYSIS - There have been multiple new ignitions throughout
California, the Northwest, Nevada and the Northern Rockies.
Moderate fire dangers and showers are keeping acreage losses to
a minimum. Initial attack resources are being heavily utilized.

6) PROGNOSIS - Reassignment and some demobilization of resources is
expected as major fires reach containment.

NPS from BFM/Boise).

OFFICE NOTES

1) The Office of Aircraft Services (OAS) issues periodic, as needed safety
alerts on specific hazards or items of an urgent nature needing attention by
DOI users. They also regularly issue summaries of DOI incidents in BLADE
AND WING. All aviation users are encouraged to put their names on the
mailing lists for these two items. Contact OAS for further information at
FTS 554-9682 or 208-334-9682; ask for Bob Lewis. Additional information can
be obtained through Butch Farabee in RAD.

2) Acadia has recently implement a field EMS report form which they like.
They had 1,000 made for $250 locally. Any area interested in seeing a copy
should contact Butch Farabee in RAD.

3) Reminder to Regional Chief Rangers and Fire Coordinators; We still do
not have a cross-deputization agreement with the Forest Service, although
we're making progress in that direction. The restrictions which have been
in effect for the last two fire seasons pertaining to the use of
commissioned rangers in law enforcement roles on USPS fires are still in
effect.
