INCIDENTS
89-239 - Olympic (Washington) - Structural Fire
At 6 a.m. on August 22nd, a fire broke out in a shorted fan motor in the bar
of the Kalaloch Lodge. Rangers responded and were able to extinguish the
fire with three fire extinguishers. Estimated damage to the building was
put at $1,000. No injuries were reported, nor is there any estimate as to
how long that section of the lodge may be out of operation. The lodge is
not a government structure. (Chuck Janda, CR, OLYM, via CompuServe message
from Mark Forbes, RAD/PNRO).
89-240 - Acadia (Maine) - Search; Visitor Fatality
Late on the evening of the 21st, park dispatchers were notified by local
police that B.K., a Catholic priest from Springfield, New
York, had been reported as missing. B.K. had been hiking in the park.
Rangers, Mount Desert Island Rescue Association people and a National Guard
medevac helicopter were employed on the subsequent search, which began in
the early hours of the 22nd and continued until B.K.'s body was located at
8:30 that morning between the Mount Mansel trail and the shore of Long Pond.
An autopsy is being conducted, but it is believed that B.K.'s death stemmed
from injuries incurred as a result of a serious fall. (Telephone report
from Peggy Sandretzky, RAD/NARO).
