INCIDENTS
89-268 - Denali (Alaska) - Death of Employee
On September 9th, Paul J. Andert, Jr., 40, a seasonal equipment operator at
Denali since 1975, died in a boating accident on Butte Lake, located about
six miles off the Denali Highway east of Cantwell. Andert and two other
residents of Healy, Alaska, were fishing on the lake when their boat was
swamped by high winds. Only one of the three men made it to store. Andert
and the other man apparently died of hypothermia, as all three v/ere reported
to have been, wearing life preservers. (CompuServe message from Tom

39-269 - Statue of Liberty (New York) - Demonstration
Approximately 50 people protesting art censorship and cutbacks in art
funding conducted, a peaceful demonstration on the northeast corner of
Liberty Island on the afternoon of the 9th. Early indications ware that
members of the radical Missing Foundation, a group with a history of
violence, would be in attendance, so five members of the NARO SET team and
19 US Park Police officers w/ere sent to the island to support the 10
commissioned, rangers on the park's staff. The law enforcement specialist
for the region and two FBI agents from the bureau's terrorism task force
were also on hand, and NYPD had patrol boats in the area. The group
displayed art work, performed some "guerilla, theater", then disbanded, after
the two-hour-long demonstration, which was conducted, under permit from the

89-270 - Washington Monument (D.C.) - Demonstration
The monument was closed for about 30 minutes on September 10th when five
Cuban nationals handcuffed, themselves to a railing at the 400-foot level of
the monument. The demonstrators, who identified themselves as members of a.
group known as the Thirtieth of November, left voluntarily and were taken in
by Park Police officers for questioning. They were not charged. According
to a news release which they distributed, the group was protesting the
"massacre" of hundreds of young Cubans by Fidel Castro 17 years ago and
continued human-rights violations in Cuba. (Philadelphia Inquirer,

89-271 - Blue Ridge Parkway (Virginia) - Fatal Accident
On September 10th, R.P., 68, of Bluefield, West Virginia, was
riding with a group of motorcyclists on the parkway when he lost control of
his motorcycle and hit a guardrail. He died, of his injuries soon after the
accident. The cause of the accident is unknown; R.P. was not speeding,
nor was he affected by alcohol or road conditions. (Telephone report from

89-272 - Gateway (New York) - Apparent Drownings
Early on the afternoon of the 9th, two fishermen, whose identities are not
yet known, were fishing off the tip of the jetty at Breezy Point when, storm
surf from an off-shore hurricane washed them into the ocean. Witnesses
reported, the incident, and a full-scale search was initiated by the Park
Police, Coast Guard and NYPD. No trace of the two men has yet been found.

3) FIRE ACTIVITY - 62 fires for 211 acres in last 24 hours.
4) ANALYSIS - Very high fire dangers continue to be recorded in
California and in scattered locations in the Great Basin and
Southwest. A RED FLAG WARNING has been posted for gusty east winds
and low humidities for western Washington and Oregon.
5) PROGNOSIS - The potential exists for increased activity as the
hunting season progresses throughout the western states. No resource
shortages are anticipated.

1) OAS has sent out an announcement for five aviation management courses to
be held over the next few months around the country. These courses are
intended for mid-level aviation managers. All NPS areas currently on the

Orleans (January 9-11, 1990), San Diego (January 23-25, 1990), Denver
