INCIDENTS

89-297 - Gauley River (West Virginia) - Drowning

On September 27th, W.S., 29, of Mt. Airy, Maryland, was kayaking
down a Class VI rapid in the lower Meadows River when he went over a ledge,
dropped approximately five feet, overturned, and was pinned underwater in
his kayak. Approximately 15 minutes passed before his two companions could
extricate him. CPR was begun immediately. Rangers were notified, arrived
at the scene, and continued CPR for another hour without gaining any
response from W.S.. He was later pronounced dead by the coroner's
office. The river level at the time of the incident was 700 CFS (cubic feet
per second); the river's normal flow is about 400 CFS. (Rick Brown, NERI,
via faxed message from Garry Traynham, RAD/MARO).

89-298 - Petrified Forest (Arizona) - Arrest of Dangerous Person

During a domestic dispute between a son and his father at a rock shop
adjacent to the south boundary of the park on the 26th, the son took an HK
semi-automatic rifle from a Navajo County deputy's vehicle and fled the area
on foot. Park rangers joined in the search for the man. Rangers Bill
Wagers and Jessie Dicker subsequently found him walking along a road near
the park's south entrance and placed him under arrest. The rifle was later
found in a nearby field. (Kerry Isensee, CR, PEFO, via CompuServe report
from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO).

FIRE ACTIVITY

The NIFCC situation report is not available this morning.

OTHER NEWS...

Oregon: An extensive air and ground search Thursday failed to find the two
men who rammed a Forest Service vehicle and fired shots at three pursuing
USFS agents and a sheriff's deputy. The four had been checking out a
marijuana patch when the incident occurred around 7 a.m. A maroon four-
wheel-drive pickup rammed the unoccupied USFS Blazer, causing front-end
damage to the suspect vehicle and extensive damage to the Blazer. In the
ensuing chase on Forest Service roads, occupants of the pickup fired
"numerous shots" at the officers, but neither the officers nor their
vehicles were hit. The vehicle made it back to a state highway and
disappeared. (UPI story).
