INCIDENTS

89-319 - Ozark (Missouri) - Climbing Fatality

On the afternoon of October 15th, J.R., 44, of University City,
Missouri, was canoeing with a group of friends when she put ashore near the
Round Spring group camping site and began climbing a cliff. While ascending
the cliff, J.R. fell about 40 feet to the ground. Emergency medical
personnel were summoned, and she was transported by helicopter to Ozark
Medical Center where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Rangers are
investigating the possibility that this was an alcohol-related accident.
(Tom Graham, CR, OZAR, via CompuServe message from Capt. J.J. McLaughlin,
RAD/MWRO).

89-320 - Buck Island Reef (Virgin Islands) - Drug Recovery

On the morning of October 12th, ranger Joe lutein found 35 kilos of cocaine
that were apparently air-dropped onto the reef on the 11th or 12th.
Chemical lights were attached to one package. The cocaine, valued at about
$700,000, was seized, and the incident was reported to the FBI and DEA.
(Telephone report from Capt. Steve Alscher, RAD/SERO).

OTHER NEWS...

On October 14th, a Texas judge sentenced 17-year-old Eduardo Rodriguez
Pinada to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting a rafter on the Rio Grande
outside of Big Bend NP last November. Rodriguez was one of four youths who
stood atop a 300-foot-high canyon wall and fired shots that struck and
killed Michael Heffley and wounded his wife and their river guide. The
shots were fired from the Mexican side of the river, but a person who stands
in one country and fatally shoots a person in another country can be tried
in either nation under international law. Two juveniles are in custody in
Mexico in connection with this case. (News report in 10/15 Baltimore Sun).
