RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION
MORNING REPORT
Attention: Directorate
Regional and Park Chief Rangers, USPP, BIFC, FLETC
CC: RAD Information Net
Day/date: Wednesday, November 1, 1989
INCIDENTS
89-326 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Follow-up on Search for Missing Person
The search for fisherman J.B. which was begun near Lee's Ferry on the
24th was terminated the same day after reports were received that J.B. had
been seen drinking coffee in a nearby restaurant, then hitchhiking from the
area with his fishing gear. (Telephone report from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO).
89-331 - Fort Jefferson (Florida) - Follow-up on Ship Grounding
It is not yet clear just where jurisdictionally the 'Mavro Vetranit' went
aground. The park believes that the ship is within monument boundaries, the
Coast Guard considers the ship to be outside U.S. territorial waters, and
the state claims that the ship grounded in state waters. The Coast Guard
now estimates that it will take at least a week to free the 'Mavro Vetranit'
and has stated that the prolongation of efforts to move the ship will
increase the risk of an oil spill in the surrounding waters. The Coast
Guard has asked the ship's owner to remove about 143,000 gallons of fuel oil
and diesel oil from the ship as soon as possible. An agent for the ship's
owner has said that workers will begin transferring the ship's fuel oil to a
barge today. Oil booms have already been deployed around the ship, and
pollution response equipment is in position to respond if needed. (United
Press report, 10/31; telephone report from Pat Tolle, EVER).
