INCIDENTS

89-352 - Big Bend (Texas) - Follow-up on Search in Progress

Late on the afternoon of the 14th, 16-year-old P.P., who'd
been the subject of a major search since his disappearance on the
10th, walked out onto a highway about 40 miles from the point
where he was last seen. P.P. flagged down a passing car; the
driver recognized him and drove him to a ranger station. P.P.
is in good shape and spent the night at a lodge in the park with
his mother, who'd flown to the scene earlier in the week. He
will be debriefed today. (Telephone report from Phil Young,
RAD/SWRO).

89-355 - Lake Clark (Alaska) - Volcanic Eruption

Mt. Redoubt, which began showing signs of renewed activity this
past week, erupted yesterday. Ash from the volcano was projected
to an altitude of 35,000' and was blowing toward Anchorage at 70
miles per hour. The ash was to have arrived over the city around
12:30 yesterday afternoon. More information to follow.
(CompuServe message from Karen Cox, RAD/ARO).

89-358 - Big Thicket (Texas) - Accidental Shooting

On the evening of December 12th, C.C. of La Porte,
Texas, was walking to his truck after a day's hunt in the Lance
Rosier Unit of the preserve when he heard a shot, felt pain in
his back and fell to the ground. The shooter, N.H.S. of
Saratoga, Texas, and his companion rushed C.C. to a nearby
road, where he was picked up by an air rescue unit and
transported to a hospital. C.C. underwent several hours of
surgery to repair damage done by three shotgun pellets in his
back and one in his liver. He is in stable condition and
expected to recover. H.H.S. has said that the light was fading
at the time of the incident and that he thought C.C. was a
deer. (Mike Livingston, CR, BITH, via CompuServe report from
Bill Tanner, RAD/SWRO).

89-359 - Golden Gate (California) - Drug Arrests

Park Police officers arrested two men - A.C., 20, of
Redway, California, and R.N., 20, of Garberville,
California - at House Cove on the 11th for possession of marijuana
for sale. The officers also confiscated over $9,000 worth of drugs
and $711 in currency. (CompuServe message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO).

OTHER NEWS...

Everglades: President Bush signed legislation on the 13th which
clears the way for the expansion of Everglades and orders the
Corps of Engineers to restore the natural flow of water to the
park. The 107,600-acre expansion will be undertaken in
cooperation with the state of Florida, which will donate 35,000
acres to the park. It's estimated that it will cost $40
million to acquire the rest of the acreage, with Florida having
agreed to pay 20 percent of the cost. (Chris Connell, Associated
Press, 12/13/89).

OFFICE NOTES

1) Representatives from Ranger Activities will be making a
presentation on the national parks to an international group in
January, and we could use your help in getting some slides. If
you have slides showing park scenery, facilities, visitors and
related subjects and wouldn't mind sharing them with us, we could
sure use them. Return is guaranteed for those parks that would
like to get the slides back. We need them by early January.
Thanks!
