INCIDENTS
90-6 - Everglades (Florida) - Search; Person Found
On January 8th, a West German national in his late 20's rented a boat from a
park concessioner and headed out into Whitewater Bay. He returned late that
evening. The next morning, he again rented a boat for a trip into the bay, but
this time brought a good deal of camping and other equipment with him. When he
failed to return, the concessioner notified the park and a search was begun.
The bay and Flamingo area were covered by boats, a helicopter and a fixed-wing
aircraft. Late in the afternoon, the boat was found on a small island and
searchers located the man not far away. He'd consumed an entire bottle of
Nuprin, sliced his wrist and shot himself in the head with a flare device, but
was still alive. He was medevaced to an area hospital. His current condition
is not known. (Telephone report from Ken Morgan, CR, EVER, 4:30 p.m. EST,
1/10/90).
90-7 - Whitman Mission (Washington); Fort Clatsop (Oregon) - Storm Damage
Over the past few days, severe weather in the Pacific Northwest has impacted
both parks. Whitman Mission reported winds gusting up to 130 mph during a storm
which struck southeast Washington over the weekend. The park lost several large
trees and hundreds of feet of split rail fence. Damage is currently reported to
be about $3,000. Over five inches of rain fell on Fort Clatsop on Monday and
Tuesday. Although it's not yet clear whether any damage occurred their, the
park had been without power for 28 hours at the time of the report. (CompuServe
message from Mark Forbes, RAD/PNRO, noon EST, 1/10/90).
90-8 - Baltimore-Washington Parkway (Maryland) - Fatal Accident
On January 9th, Park Police responded to an accident in which a 1985 Oldsmobile
with two occupants struck the rear of a van on the southbound side of the
parkway near Route 95. Both vehicles left the roadway. The passenger in the
car was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The driver of the car was
admitted with multiple injuries, and the operator of the van was treated for a
leg injury and possible neck and back injuries. (CompuServe message from Capt.
Dave Blackburn, RAD/NCRO, 1:30 p.m. EST, 1/1/0/90).
