INCIDENTS
89-211 - Olympic (Washington) Follow-up on Drug Seizure and Arrests
On August 3, 1989, seven park rangers and two DEA agents served a search warrant
for drugs at a trailer on a private inholding in the Lake Quinault area of the
park. Among the items subsequently seized were 62 sensimilla plants, valued at
$62,000, a 30.06 rifle and a pickup truck. On January 4th, the defendant
entered a plea of guilty to "manufacturing a controlled substance" in U.S.
District Court in Tacoma, Washington. She was sentenced to serve ten months in
a correctional institution and three years supervised probation upon release.
The defendant's property and vehicle have been seized and civil forfeiture is

Yellowstone - According to the most recent calculations based on satellite
photos, the acreage burned in the park in 1988 was 20% less than previously
estimated (down from 988,925 to 793,880), and the acreage most seriously burned
dropped by 42% (from 562,350 to 323,291). The revised estimates also indicate
that 281,098 acres sustained a mixture of canopy and surface burn, 51,301 acres
of sage and grassland burned, and the remaining 138,190 acres sustained burns to
the edges of forested areas or to isolated stands of trees in unforested areas.
