89-370 - Dinosaur (Colorado) - Follow-up on Poaching Incident
On the morning of October 27, 1989, park rangers apprehended and arrested
M.L., 39, and D.H., 18, for poaching deer in the monument.
The two were captured after a high-speed chase. The pair were charged with
attempting to elude a peace officer, reckless driving, speeding, taking of
wildlife, and failure to possess either valid state drivers licenses or
hunting licenses. M.L. was also charged with possession of marijuana. A
record check on Larsen revealed that he was a two-time convicted felon and
that he had just been released from prison. D.H. pleaded state evidence and
was assessed a $500 fine after a short stay in jail. On January 23rd,
M.L. was sentenced to two consecutive 179-day terms in Federal prison for
his conviction on charges of speeding and illegal taking of wildlife. The
state of Utah has two felony arrest warrants awaiting M.L. after the
conclusion of this sentence. (Jerry Ballard, DINO, via telefax report from
Jim Reilly, RAD/RMRO, 4:30 EDT, 2/1/90).
