RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION
MORNING REPORT
Attention: Directorate
Regional and Park Chief Rangers, USPP, BIFC, FLETC
CC: RAD Information Net
Day/date: Monday, February 12, 1990
INCIDENTS
90-20 - Point Reyes (California) - Follow-up on Search
On January 27th, the park began a search for R.B. and J.M.,
both of whom went fishing in the park and failed to return home. On
February 1st, J.M.'s body was found at Pierce Point Beach. J.M. is the
son of retired WRO personnel officer B.M. (CompuServe message from
Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, noon EST, 2/9/90).
90-25 - New River Gorge (West Virginia) - Arrest of Commissioned Ranger
On the night of February 5th, park rangers completed an investigation into
the theft of a computer and printer from the park's Canyon Rim Visitor
Center with the execution of a search warrant at the house of a commissioned
seasonal employee and the recovery of approximately $6,000 worth of stolen
government property. The employee was arrested on the following day and
charged with grand larceny and possession of stolen property. In addition
to the computer and printer, the rangers found badges, flashlights, law
enforcement leather gear, camera equipment and SAR gear. Drug paraphernalia
and material believed to be marijuana were also discovered. A check of the
employee's background revealed a prior arrest and association with illegal
drugs. Although the employee was commissioned, she was not required to take
a drug test at the beginning of her 1989 appointment because she was not in
a law enforcement position. Because the employee is a "career" seasonal,
New River, with the concurrence of MARO, will develop an employee alert for
this individual and distribute more detailed background information in the
near future. The alert will contain information about a second individual
who is associated with this case, has an arrest record, has been connected
with illegal drugs, and is trying to obtain a law enforcement position with
the NPS. (Bill Blake, CR, NERI, via telefax report, 11 a.m. EST, 2/9/90).
90-26 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Successful Search
On January 29th, rangers initiated a search for a father and his ten-year-
old daughter who were overdue from a three-day hiking trip. The pair were
found on Grand View Trail the following day. The father had suffered a
sprained ankle as a result of a fall. Both were taken to Grand Canyon
clinic and are reported to be in satisfactory condition. (GRCA dispatch,
via CompuServe message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 11 a.m. EST, 2/9/90).
90-27 - Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Storm Damage
On February 7th and 8th, winds of from 30 to 40 m.p.h. with gusts over 50
m.p.h. inflicted damage at the 4,000' elevation of the park. Trees started
to fall on roadways late on the evening of the 7th. The Namakanipaio
campground and all concession cabins in that area were closed on the
afternoon of the 8th due to the danger of falling trees. At about the same
time, an ohia tree fell on a moving rental vehicle near Thurston Lava Tube,
causing extensive property damage and minor personal injury to one of the
vehicle's passengers. The campgrounds and cabin were to have remained
closed until some time on the 9th. (Paul Ducasse, HAVO, via CompuServe
message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 1:30 p.m. EST, 2/9/90).
