INCIDENTS

90-22 - Yellowstone (Wyoming) - Fatality

On the afternoon of February 25th, 11-year-old D.C.C. of
Livingston, Montana, snowmobiled with his family and friends from Mammoth to
Canyon. When the group stopped near the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone,
D.C.C. and a 13-year-old friend ran ahead of their families down a trail
to a point which overlooked the falls. Snow and ice had piled up to the top
of the railing at the overlook; when D.C.C. slipped, and fell, there was
nothing to check him. from falling the 200 feet to the ice cone at the bottom
of the falls. An emergency medical technician rappelled down 300 feet from
a helicopter to retrieve D.C.C., who was pronounced dead of multiple
injuries after being flown out. of the canyon. (Telephone report from. Dan
Sholly, CR, YELL, 2/26/90).

90-23 - Voyageurs (Minnesota) - Burglary

On February 26th, a park maintenance employee discovered that a person or
persons had entered, the Kabetogama Narrows and Ash River maintenance
building, broken the lock to the tool cage, and stolen numerous items,
including power tools. Replacement value for the items stolen has been
determined to be in excess of $5,000. Park rangers are investigating the
incident with officers from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Department.
There are two suspects in. the case. (Hugh Dougher, Acting CR, VOYA, via
CompuServe message from Capt. J.J. McLaughlin, 2 p.m. EST, 3/1/90).

90-24 - Gateway (New York/New Jersey) - Oil Spill

In the early hours of March 1st, 2.7,000 gallons of number six heating oil
spilled into the eastern end of the Kill Van Kull waterway in New York
harbor from a hole in the hull of a barge being loaded at the Exxon Bayonne
terminal. Kill Van Kull, a narrow east-west waterway between Staten Island
and New Jersey, was boomed at the west end, but authorities expect the spill
to continue to spread, to the east and south. Predictions were for the
surface sheen to reach Gateway's Sandy Hook unit late yesterday. Liberty
Island, however, is outside the area that the spill is expected to cover.
Early reports from the Coast Guard indicate that the barge owner will pay
for the cleanup operation. (Incident report from Jake Hoogland,
Environmental Compliance, WASO, 3/1/90).
