INCIDENTS
90-32 Fire Island (New York) Structural Fire
At about 5 p.m. on the afternoon of the 14th, a fire was
discovered in a 30' by 30' storage structure owned by Watch Hill
Concessions about one mile from park headquarters. The
Patchogue volunteer fire department was summoned, and they had
the fire under control by 6:10 p.m. Although the fire
apparently began outside the building, both the interior and
exterior of the structure suffered severed damage. When last
appraised in 1979, the building was valued at $15,000. The
concessioner also reported that the building contained a number
of two-way radios and seven year's worth of business records.
The Suffolk County PD is in the process of conducting an arson
investigation. Watch Hill Concessions runs a marina, restaurant,
snack bar and grocery in the off-shore Watch Hill section of the
park. (Don Weir, CR, FIIS, via CompuServe report from Jim McKay,
RAD/NARO, 10 a.m., 3/15/90).
90-33 Denali (Alaska) Attempted Winter Ascent of Mt. McKinley
The Japanese climbing team that was attempting a winter ascent
of Mt. McKinley failed to reach the summit and has returned from
the mountain. The climbers were not able to get their camp
higher than the 14,200' level due to heavy snows and extreme
winds. They told rangers that they will try again next year.
(CompuServe message from DENA, 3/15/90).
