INCIDENTS
90-48 - Everglades (Florida) - Illegal Fishing Conviction
In December of 1989, a park ranger flying over the park's Gulf
Coast district observed the captain and a crew member on a
commercial fishing boat use a large net to illegally take fish in
the park. When the ranger landed and approached the boat, the
fishermen cut their net and fled. Both the captain and crew
member were charged with commercial fishing within the park and
were found guilty by a Federal magistrate on March 22nd. The
magistrate employed the revised fines established by the Federal
Reform Act of 1987 and fined the captain the minimum of $5,000
plus the cost of the net and court costs. The crewman was fined
$150 in court costs. (Mark Lewis, EVER, via telephone report
from Steve Smith, RAD/SERO, 3/23/90).
