INCIDENTS
90-49 - Cape Cod (Massachusetts) - Car Clouting Arrests
On March 16th, car clouters broke into several cars in national seashore
parking lots in Eastham and Wellfleet and stole over $1,200. Later that
day, two men attempted to cash a $400 check taken from one of the vehicles
at a bank in Wellfleet and were photographed by the bank's cameras. The
next day, the victims of one of these larcenies stopped at a gas station as
they were leaving the cape and saw two men in a Chevy S-10 Blazer who they'd
noticed in the seashore parking lot prior to the break-in. They later
contacted the Wellfleet police and park rangers and identified the men as
those in the bank photographs. On March 29th, a pocket book containing
credit cards and $250 was stolen from a vehicle in the seashore parking lot
at Eastham. The victims said that the men in the bank photographs were near
their car prior to the break-in, and a ranger reported seeing a vehicle
matching the Blazer's description in the area on the same day. Descriptions
of the vehicle and occupants were broadcast to all Cape Cod police
departments. State troopers stopped the vehicle later in the day 30 miles
from the park. They arrested Michael Nearing, 31, of North Easton, and John
Terrio of Brockton and charged them with larceny from a motor vehicle,
possession of burglary tools, and three counts of breaking and entering.
Both men are currently being held in prison in lieu of bail. (Dennis
Burnett, DR, CACO, via CompuServe report to RADAiASO, 1:30 EST, 3/30/90).
