INCIDENTS
90-59 - Sagamore Hill (New York) - Theft
On the morning of April 7th, park rangers discovered that a .38 caliber Colt
revolver owned by Teddy Roosevelt had been stolen from a display case in the
park's museum. Indications are that it was taken during normal visitor
hours sometime on Thursday afternoon or Friday. The weapon, which is valued
at $500,000, was carried by Roosevelt at San Juan Hill and has two
inscriptions on it - "July 1, 1898, San Juan, carried and used by Col.
Theodore Roosevelt" on the right side; "From the sunken battleship Maine" on
the left side. The incident is being investigated by rangers from Fire
Island, Nassau PD and Cove Neck PD. The FBI may also join in the
investigation in the near future. The Service will be offering a reward for
information leading to its recovery, but the amount of the reward has not
yet been determined. There has been a great deal of publicity about the
theft in the New York area. (Telephone reports from Capt. Dale Dickerhoof,
RAD/NARO, 4/7 and 4/8/90).
