INCIDENTS

90-60 - Great Smokies (North Carolina/Tennessee) - MVA with Fatality

Just past midnight on the 8th, the driver of a Mustang LX heading northbound
on the spur between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge lost control of his vehicle,
went into a front skid which deteriorated into a side skid, and struck two
trees. The right rear passenger, 22-year-old W.T., was killed.
The driver, J.T., 18, suffered a depressed skull fracture and was
flown by Lifestar helicopter to St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville. He
is in critical condition. Two of the three remaining passengers, B.R.,
20, and D.W., 14, were treated and released; the third,
A.W., 20, remains hospitalized with a broken collar bone, broken
shoulder and possible bruised kidney. All five were from Sevierville,
Tennessee. It is believed that the vehicle was travelling at a high rate of
speed when it went off the road, and investigators are looking into the
possible involvement of alcohol. Charges are pending. (Bob Marriott,
Acting CR, GRSM, via telephone message from Steve Smith, RAD/SERO, 7 a.m.
EDT and CompuServe message, noon EDT, 4/9/90).

90-61 - Joshua Tree (California) - Injury to Park Ranger

At 4 a.m. on April 9th, ranger G.A., 40, was seriously injured in
a one-car motor vehicle accident outside of the park. G.A. was
returning home from another employee's residence when the accident occurred.
He was first taken to a hospital in Twenty-Nine Palms, but was then
medevaced to Palm Springs for specialized treatment. Doctors have
determined that G.A. suffered a fracture of the fifth cervical
vertebra; he has full movement in his right arm, slight movement in his left
arm, and no movement or sensation below the waist. G.A. also suffered
severe bruising of the chest, but a CAT scan revealed no injuries to his
head. There are no plans for surgery. (Rick Anderson, Superintendent,
JOTR, via CompuServe messages from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 11 a.m. EDT and 5
p.m. EDT, 4/9/90).

90-62 - Indiana Dunes (Indiana) - Apparent Suicide

While securing the Long Lake parking lot at West Beach on March 30th, a park
ranger saw a pickup parked by the water. He discovered the body of W.P.,
54, of Gary, Indiana, in the truck; he had a single gunshot wound
in the temple and a .22 caliber handgun in his right hand. His death
appears to have been a suicide. (William Tadych, INDU, via CompuServe
message from Capt. J.J. McLaughlin, RAD/MWRO, 2 p.m. EDT, 4/9/90).
