CC: RAD Information Net
Day/date: Tuesday, April 17, 1990
INCIDENTS
90-62 - Bering Land Bridge (Alaska) - Fatality
The body of J.K., 59, was discovered by a member of a camping group
at Serpentine Hot Springs on the morning of the 15th. J.K.'s body was
found under water in the hot springs, and their were cuts and injuries on
his face. There is some indication that he had been drinking and arguing
with members of his party on the previous night. J.K. was last seen
alive at 2:30 a.m. on the 15th. Alaska state troopers have begun an
investigation and are conducting an autopsy. (CompuServe message from Steve
Shackleton, RAD/ARO, 1:30 p.m. EDT, 4/16/90).
90-63 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Assist on Aircraft Accident
A Cessna 207 operated by Window Rock Tours crashed at the Grand Canyon
Airport just after 3 p.m. on the afternoon of April 13th. There were no
fatalities, but all seven of the people on board were injured. The plane
apparently lost power on take-off, then crashed a mile from the field. Two
of the injured have been released; the remaining five have been
hospitalized, with two in intensive care at Flagstaff Medical Center.
Ninety percent of the emergency personnel at the scene were park employees,
including all of the medical personnel. (John Benjamin, GRCA, via
CompuServe message from Herb Gercke, FAD/WRO, noon EDT, 4/16/90).
90-64 - Amistad (Texas) - Apparent Drowning
On the evening of the 14th, three Laughlin Air Force Base student pilots
were cruising on the lake in Mexican waters in a boat capable of at least 50
m.p.h. when two of them - J.B. and F.M. - noticed that the
third member of the group - J.K. - was no longer in the boat. They
backtracked and found J.K.'s shirt, but saw no other sign of him. They
reported the incident to park rangers, and a park dive team was on site by
sundown. Dives were made in the area that evening and the next morning, but
no sign of J.K. was found. The incident took place at a spot where the
water is from 12 to 20 feet deep, visibility is about four feet, and the
water temperature at 10 feet is 62 degrees. Mexican authorities were
contacted, but have not yet become involved in the search. (Eldon Kohlman,
CR, AMIS, via CompuServe message from Bill tanner, RAD/SWRO, 9:30 a.m. EDT,
4/16/90).
