INCIDENTS

99-104 - Indiana Dunes (Indiana) - Assault on Officer

Just before midnight on the 18th, a Porter County police officer observed a
suspicious person in the Porter Beach parking lot. Upon contacting the man,
19-year-old C.M. of Chesterton, Indiana, the officer discovered that
he was intoxicated and had a severe, self-inflicted laceration on his left
arm from his elbow to his wrist. The officer requested NPS assistance; once
the ranger arrived, the two attempted to subdue C.M.. During the struggle,
the officer was cut by a razor which had been hidden in C.M.'s hand. C.M.
was arrested, treated and transported to a local jail. The officer was
treated for a laceration to his hand and released. The ranger did not
sustain any injuries during the incident. (Joni Jones, INDU, via CompuServe

99-105 - Rock Creek Park (D.C.) - MVA with Fatality

During the early hours of May 19th, Park Police officers responded to a
report of a traffic accident at the intersection of Rock Creek Parkway and
cathedral Avenue. Upon arrival, they (discovered that a two-door BMW had
left the roadway and struck several trees, killing one male occupant and
seriously injuring the other. The injured man was taken to Georgetown

3) FIRE NARRATIVES

a) NATIONAL PARK SERVICE:

- Gator Pay (Everglades) - The fire has been declared out.

b) OTHER AGENCIES:

- Big Fire (Lincoln NF) - The fire has been contained. Demobilization
is planned for today.

4) FIRE ACTIVITY - 93 fires for 1,186 acres in past 24 hours.

5) FIRE DANGERS - The following parks are experiencing high to extreme fire
danger this morning:

6) ANALYSIS - Very high and extreme fire dangers continue to be reported
by areas in the Southwest. National parks report the following:

* Guadalupe Mountains - Fire restrictions remain in effect. The crew
assigned to the Big Fire has returned to the park. A six-person
initial attack crew has once again been staged at Pine Springs.

* Grand Canyon - Red flag (conditions persist. Quickly drying fuels
are leading to explosive conditions.

* Saguaro - The fire danger continues to be high to extreme in the
southeast zone of the park. Temperatures yesterday were to have
hit 105 degrees.

* Everglades - The park will be conducting extra patrols during the
holiday weekend due to the increased potential for ignitions.

7) PROGNOSIS - The potential for increased fire activity exists in the
Southwest due to dry conditions and forecasted high winds.
