INCIDENTS

90-276 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Vice Presidential Visit

Vice President Quayle and his family left the South Rim at 7
a.m. yesterday morning on a 10-mile hike to Phantom Ranch,
where they were to board a raft to float 9 0 to 100 miles down
the Colorado River. They are to arrive at Lava Falls on
Sunday, where they will be flown out of the canyon by
helicopter. (UP news story, 8/2 3).

FIRE ACTIVITY

1) PREPAREDNESS LEVEL - II

The geographic area experiencing high fire danger. Numerous
Class A, B, and C fires occurring and a potential exists for
escapes to larger (project) fires. Minimal mobilization of
resources from other geographic areas occurring. The potential
exists for mobilizing additional resources from other
geographic areas.

Alaska also has 31 fires unstaffed under modified
suppression strategy for a total of 1,322,665 acres
and 46 fires under limited suppression strategy for
1,128,105 acres.

NOTES:

- Fires - Asterisk indicates newly reported fire (on this
  report). T1 and T2 indicate assigned Type I and Type II Teams.
- Status - The following abbreviations are employed:

  * NR - No report received      * MS - Modified suppression strategy
  * CN - Contained               * MN - Being monitored
  * CL - Controlled              * None - No estimate of containment
  * CS - Confinement strategy    * Yes - Fire has been contained

3) NPS NARRATIVES -

- Yosemite (California) - All fires are either under control or
confinement strategy. There have been no significant changes
in acreages burned.

- Denali (Alaska) - The weather continues to be cool and humid.
Rain is forecast. Smokes were observed yesterday on the A-413 Fire.
Modest acreage changes have been reported on several fires (see
above).

4) NATIONAL FIRE ACTIVITY - 138 fires for 12,900 acres in past
24 hours.

5) NPS FIRE DANGERS - The following parks reported high to
extreme fire danger yesterday:

7) ANALYSIS - Initial attack activity is increasing, with many
areas in the West and Southeast picking up new and holdover
lightning fires.

8) PROGNOSIS - More holdover lightning fires are expected in
the West as warming and drying trends continue.
